Planning a Golf Trip to Newport, RI: Courses, Tips and Where to Stay

The Ideal Stay Sauna Property Living Room

Newport, Rhode Island has one of the oldest and most storied golf cultures in America. Newport Country Club — founded in 1893 — hosted the first US Open and first US Amateur Championship. That heritage, combined with several strong courses across Aquidneck Island and the surrounding area, makes it one of the better destinations on the East Coast for a group golf trip.

The Courses

Newport Country Club

The historic course on Bellevue Avenue is private and requires a member introduction, but for groups with access, it’s a genuinely exceptional experience — the design and the history make it worth organising around. If your group doesn’t have a connection, a local enquiry sometimes yields results.

Carnegie Abbey Club

A private club in Portsmouth, just north of Middletown, Carnegie Abbey is consistently rated among the best courses in New England. The Tom Doak-designed layout works with the coastal landscape rather than against it. Guest access through accommodation partnerships is sometimes available — worth enquiring about when you book.

Montaup Country Club

A semi-private course in Portsmouth with excellent views and a more accessible booking process than the private clubs. A good option for groups wanting a competitive round without the complications of private access.

Green Valley Country Club

A well-regarded public course in Portsmouth, Green Valley offers an enjoyable round in good condition with a friendly pace of play. Easy to book and a solid choice for a relaxed day on the course.

Planning the Trip

Most serious golf itineraries out of Newport pair two days on the course with time in the city — the mansions, the harbour restaurants, and an evening on Thames Street make for a natural counterpoint to the golf.

Both of our Middletown homes are 15–20 minutes from all four courses and come with everything a group needs after a day out: a proper kitchen, comfortable living space, and — at the Aquidneck Avenue property — a heated pool that earns its place after a full day of walking the fairways.
